Well, let me tell you that movie is best at every level. Sense, Background, Photographic style, Performances, Music, jokes, breakthrough inovating ideas and everything ! You want a way to change your life ? ... You got it !

Lost Highway

Psychological analyse

/ Fantastic view

Dir : David Lynch .. (Dune, Sailor & Lula, Blue velvet, twin peaks, mullholand drive.... )

Cast : Bill Pullman, Patricia Arquette, Balthazar Getty, Robert Blake, Robert Loggia...

Another form of escaping the mind's problems. When this slow motion stylish movie went out, everyone was like : It's great but i didn't get it ! And everyone asked the director some clues to understand this fantastic tale ... The kind of people who ask 'where are the forks ?' when entering the kitchen, instead of looking for them in the right place ... Well the thing is you have to admit what you see, instead of always wondering what it means, and you'll just understand...a deeper conception of the human beings.

AKIRA

almost lost friendship

/Fanstastic Wild animated feature

Dir : Katsuhiro Otomo (Robot Carnival, manimani no monogatari, memories ..)

This is the movie that got me into japanimation... Since friendship is something that's sacred for me, This movie is just one of my favourites, but don't restrain it to the friendship storyline, it's much more complex than that. Like Esp children monitored by the lost war army, ethic thoughts and anticipationist cities and delinquence ... This is a must see !

Phantom of the Paradise

Impossible love / devil tale

/ musical dark comedy

Dir : Brian de Palma (Carrie, Blow out, snake eyes ...)

Cast : Paul Williams, William Finley, Jessica Harper, ...

What would you do for fame and love? Well, composer Winslow Leach didn't have no choice. After being robbed his music by The superstar platinum record seller SWAN, he has no choice but to sell his soul to the devil in order to protect his only love. This movie ( which I consider to be Brian de Palma's most complete one ) is so moving, thanks to the directing, but also to the fabulous multi-edge score by mister Williams. The story is perfectly romantic and sad as ever.

Clerks

deep-not so deep comedy

/ animated series

Dir : Kevin Smith (Mallrats, chasing Amy, dogma )

Cast : Brian O'Halloran, Jeff Anderson, Marilyn Ghigliotti, Lisa Spoonauer, Jason Mewes, Kevin Smith ...

Time to have some fun ! But I really hope New Jersey is not as a shithole as it is said to be !!! This is the story of Poor Dante Hicks that isn't even supposed to work today. His pal Randall, his 'my-videoshop-is-closed-when-i-talk-to-my-pal' friend is here to help, but nothing ever goes the right way! Add some deep conversations about star wars, and customers, and you have one of the most funny movies ever! The movie was declined on a long awaited animated series that are just as fun ! And not forgetting the all star crew, famous jay and silent bob( <-- actually played by mister kevin himself ! ) !

Red Rock West

film noir / road movie

/ honesty's good book

Dir : John Dahl (Kill me again, Last seduction, Rounders, unforgetable)

Cast : Nicolas Cage, Dennis Hopper, Lara Flynn Boyle, J.T. Walsh

Michael is far from home. He needs a job, but his invalid leg and honest behaviour prevents him from working in a drill crew. He ends up in Red Rock, where he's mistaken for some sort of killer by a bar owner that wants his wife killed. He tries to make it all for the better, but before he knows, he's in the deepest trouble. I really like John Dahl's movie atmosphere. Kinda reminds the old 50s classics . Mix it with a deep-america athmosphere and good photography and you have a more than classic picture.

The limey

film noir

/ style exercise

Dir : Steven Soderberg (Sex lies and videotapes, Kafka, Out of sight, Erin Bronkovitch, Traffic ...)

Cast : Terence Stamp, Peter Fonda, Luis Guzman, Lesley Ann Warren, Barry Newman ...

An old time lone gunman is coming out of prison and all that matters to him is vengence for his murdered girl.

So you want to learn how to direct movies ? When then you can learn a lot from this one. First, how to give depth to a story : not too many characters. Then, how to use your camera skills to show emotion with a non-emotionnal character. And at last, how to over use flash back without being boring or anoying ! The story line is great, deep and powerful. Again a great film noir . And oh yeah, great music !

Ghost

In The

Shell

Cyberpunk bible

/ political anticipation

Dir : Mamoru Oshii ( tenshi no tamago, lum movies, Patlabor the movie, patlabor 2, Avalon...)

First close your eyes and listen to the music...Now You're somewhere else. Imagine a world where cyborgs ask themselves if they're alive or not, and where goverments have hard times dealing with cyborgs rights and issues.

Based on the manga of Masamune Shirow, this realistic adaptation is THE best cyberpunk movie. The characters are very well depainted and very present. the movie has so many depths for a so short feature you'll have to watch it over again. Being focused on the beauty of the character design is more than an option too.

Sleepy Hollow

Dark gothic fairy tale

Dir : Tim Burton (Pee Wee's big adventure, Beattlejuice, Edward scizorhands, Batman, Batman returns, Ed Wood, The Nightmare before Christmas, Mars attacks, Planet of the apes)

Cast : Johnny Depp, Christina Ricci, Miranda Richardson, Michael Gabon, Casper Van Diem, Jeffrey Jones ...

Halloween, what a big nice party ! Well If you didn't know, there was once upon a time a town where ghosts and ghouls were not taken the easy way. Here, in the town of Sleepy Hollow, people are scared by the legendary be headed horsemen that is seeking revenge. Is this just superstition, or is really a ghost-horsed-swordman cutting the heads of everyone ? Well, investigator Ichabod Crane is here to find out. This scientific cop is about to discover that science isn't an answer to everything....

Coming from Tim Burton, is this amazing tale with very well thougt secondary plots, giving to this frightening story depths and many understanding levels, as always ! Astonishing background and music (by Sir Danny Elfman, as always too ) make this movie a must have.

The Frighteners

Fantastic ghost curse

Dir : Peter Jackson (Bad taste, Braindead, Heavenly creatures, Forgotten silver, The Lord Of the Rings )

Cast : Michael J. Fox, Trini Alvarado, Peter Dobson, John Astin, Dee Wallace Stone, Jeffrey Combs, Jake Busey, Chi McBride ...

Frank Bannister is a Ghost hunter. He helps people dealing with paranormal issues, ... except that he's the source of it ! He and his two ghosts friends only he can see. The problem is now killings have begun again in this little town of Fairwater. 'Again', because 20 years ago, the now famous killer Johnny Bartlet commited murders on 20 people. Now an evil force is unleashed on Fairwater, and everyone thinks Frank is responsible. Is he ? Why does he live alone with ghosts friends ?

The most entertaining all public ghost movie ever. Very good special effects and great plot !

Bringing ou the dead

Psychological paranormal

Dir : Martin Scorsese (Taxi driver, Mean streets, After hours, the last temptation of christ, Casino, Kundun )

Cast : Nicolas Cage, Patricia Arquette, John Goodman, Wing Rhames, Tom Sizemore...

Frank Pierce is a paramedic. Working nights to nights, he's begining to break fuses since a girl he couldn't save keeps haunting him. He wants to be fired, but can't be. So he tries to deal with it, but since it's hard to really save people, he's got a hard time trying ...

Again, Mr Scorsese blows us with his love of New York city and his extraodinary director skills and vision. Combined with a deepest storyline with so many second characters interacting makes u feel you've just seen a big bunch of whole lives in only 2 hours time... Deep and Impressive !

Evangelion

Psychological /

mecha-manga series

GAINAX

Dir : Hideaki Anno

26 episodes and 2 'ending' movies

A D 2015. 20 years have passed since the earth got struck by an 'angel' awakening....

This is the story of Ikari Shinji, a young japanese boy who is to meet his father head of the nerv center in tokyo-3. Deep under the groung, the nerv's geo-front hides from the angels attacks. the counter are gigantic beings called the EVAs and activated by children. Shinji's father called him because he thinks he can be of some help in destroying the angels. But their relationship is tense. Hopefully, Shinji's contacts in the nerv do not stop with his father, but do not explain where do the EVAs come from...and why do the 'angels' keep attacking the geo-front.

For once in japanimation series, the story isn't all focused on stupid powers and non thinking and futile characters. they have emotions and the whole serie is based on the character's emotions. The battles are very well directed ... U feel like watching an old Chronenberg movie. Organic and metal... see below..

eXistenZ

Futuristic /

technology abuse

Dir : David Cronenberg (Rabid, Shivers, The brood, Scanners, Videodrome, The dead zone, The Fly, Dead Ringers, Naked lunch, Crash ...)

Cast : Jude Law, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Ian Holm, Willem dafoe, ...

Allegra Geller is a video game engineer. But not like videogames we know. She generates, through a pod you plug directly in your nervous system, an alternate reality were u can play a different you. Just before the release of eXistenZ, her latest game, a defending-reality fanatic tries to kill her. Helped by Ted Pikul, a young marketing trainee, she manages to escape with the pod, and begins the deadly chase. But is eXistenZ just a game ? Of course not.

Helped by a twisted dark score by composer Howard Shore, David Cronenberg brings us again an impressive essay on the possible effects of technology abuse. This is the kind of movie that gives you the weirdest chills. And again David is mixing with style, flesh and steel, organic and mechanic. Dark impressions ...

Don't Worry, there are too many movies and directors I like to just stop this list...

I didn't tell a word about MEMENTO yet ...

So more will come ...
